Capt. Truett (Gene) Holcomb

of Fairhaven
Born in Virginia
Position: Captain
Age: 61

Truett "Screamin' Gene" Holcomb, originally a fisherman from Virginia, moved to Massachusetts for scalloping opportunities. The captain was married to his wife, Sherry, in 2018. Holcomb was officially retired when he and first mate, Angel Nieves, went out for the day trip which capsized the vessel and took both fishermen's lives.

Captain Truett "Screamin' Gene" Holcomb and first mate, Angel Nieves, set out for a scalloping day trip off Provincetown via F/V Yankee Rose on March 5, 2026. They were to return to Fleet Marina in New Bedford that evening.

At 11:58 AM the U.S. Coast Guard received reports of a capsized vessel. USCG and Massachusetts Environmental Police authorities responded and recovered Nieves. The first mate was brought to shore, but not resuscitated. The vessel sank that afternoon, and Captain Holcomb was not recovered.

Days prior to the capsize on February 26, emergency personnel had responded to the Yankee Rose while docked due to a carbon monoxide leak which had left Nieves unconscious.
